Happy new year, my name is Dicyclopentadiene, my nick name is DCPD. I’m also called Dicyclopentadiene dimer. I am a colorless clear liquid and easy to crystallize, with camphor odor.Everyone in DCPD family has a common characteristic, and that is activity in chemistry. Do you know why?

This is because our molecule contains multiple unsaturated double bonds. Due to this feature,  we are very reactive and prone to all kinds of polymerization reactions. Then various  derivatives of Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) appeared.

Dicyclopentadiene(DCPD)'s History And Birth

We were discovered as a C10H12 hydrocarbon among the products of pyrolysis of phenol by Henry Roscoe, but he only accurately assumed that we(DCPD) were a dimer of some C5H6 hydrocarbon instead of identifing our structure. After many years, the structure of our dicyclopentadiene(DCPD) was thought to feature a cyclobutane ring as the fusion between the two subunits and deduced in 1931 through the efforts of Alder and coworker.

We came from coal tar in early when were far fewer family members than now. With the development of the oil industry, most of members in DCPD’s family born from C5 fraction, the by-product of petroleum cracking to ethylene. In this process, by-products are numerous and complicated, among them, isoprene (IP), cyclopentadiene (CPD) and m-pentadiene (PD) all have high utilization value and high content, which account for about 50% of C5 fraction.

Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) is formed by the dimerization of cyclopentadiene(CPD) by Diels-Alder reaction in solution. The first step being heating is used to copolymerize cyclopentadiene(CPD) into dicyclopentadiene(DCPD), dicyclopentadiene(DCPD) is separated from other light components (boiling point <45°C) by distillation, and then other required dienes, monocyclopentadiene are separated by solvent extraction. This method takes advantage of the characteristics that cyclopentadiene(CPD) is easier to dimerize than other C5 fractions. And then the dicyclopentadiene(DCPD) is separated from the C5 fractions by distillation because our boiling point is significantly higher than that of other C5 hydrocarbons.

Dicyclopentadiene(DCPD)'s Employment Directions

We(dicyclopentadiene /DCPD) are engaged in basic organic chemical raw materials and metal polymer materials. Last week, I just gave employment guidance courses to those graduates who would enter the job market. Children of DCPD‘s family have many choices of employment. Most of them will work in pharmaceuticals, pesticides, synthetic resins, spices, synthetic rubber and other fields. They can be changed to adamantane, 2-Chloro-5-chloromethylpyridine, metallocene, glutaraldehyde, carbamate, epoxy resin curing agent, flame retardant, dicyclopentadiene chloride (insecticide), etc. This choice is going to change their appearance and characteristic.

People found that modified hydrocarbon resins have increased reactivity in copolymerizations with drying oils, and produce paint resins with improved drying rate, gloss, and hardness. so DCPD‘s have another choice. They can join modified hydrocarbon resins company. When they work in this field, they will play a major role in inks, adhesives and paints.
