Propylene glycol (IUPAC name: propane-1,2-diol) is a colorless and odorless liquid chemical used for decades in a wide array of applications. Propylene glycol is a relatively simple organic compound that has the chemical formula C3H8O2. It is miscible with a broad range of solvents, including water, acetone, and chloroform.
Chemical Applications
Propylene glycol can be used in a variety of industrial applications and the details are as follows.
Propylene glycol is an important raw material of unsaturated polyester, epoxy resin and polyurethane resin, which account for about 45% of the total consumption of propylene glycol. This unsaturated polyester is widely used in surface coatings and reinforced plastics.
Propylene glycol reacts with fatty acid to produce propylene glycol fatty acid ester, which is mainly used as food emulsifier in the food industry and is also an excellent solvent for condiments and pigments.
Propylene glycol is often used as a solvent, softener and excipient in the manufacture of various ointments and ointments in the pharmaceutical industry. It is because that propylene glycol and all kinds of spices have good mutual solubility.
Propylene glycol is also used as a tobacco humidifier, antiseptic, lubricant for food processing equipment and solvent for food marking inks.
The propylene glycol solution is an effective antifreeze.
